Vancouver Aquarium Macro
I have been to the Vancouver Aquarium many times before and always enjoy the visit. Today I took my six year old twins once again, and brought along my macro lens for some shots. Before we left the house, I noticed some of our flowers had recently been covered by rain.
Even though the tanks and displays don't change too often, you always witness new and interesting behaviour by the animals that live there. It's always worth a return visit.
The best part of our visit today was that there were many butterflies on display in the tropical section. The kids loved it.
Nikon Z7 First Shots
One of my favorite places to visit is the Vancouver Aquarium, and that is exactly where I went to test out the new Nikon Z7. I only had a short amount of time so only two test shots but more to come soon.
Vancouver Aquarium with the iPhone X
Some photos from this weekend using the iPhone X. Captured in RAW (dng) using Adobe Lightroom Mobile (a free app) and edited with Lightroom on the desktop.
The Aquarium presents especially challenging conditions for any camera (shooting through glass, reflections, low light). Though the quality still pales to that from a camera with a larger lens and sensor I'm impressed with the photos the phone can produce. The future looks bright if this is how far we have come in only a few years.
Vancouver Aquarium with the iPhone X : 2018-09-09 : Emerald Tree Boa
Last one, not from the Aquarium but I just liked the shot :) Still an iPhone X shot.
Vancouver Aquarium : February 20
The first photo is not from my trip to the Vancouver Aquarium, but it was taken during the same weekend when my brother was in town. We decided to visit the lookout at Cypress Mountain at sunset, and lucky for us it was a fairly clear evening. This photo is taken looking south east, the sun is setting to the right of the frame and Vancouver is in the foreground. Mount Baker (which is in the USA), is visible in the background. The use of a zoom lens (@ 155mm) provides the compression in the scene. I have used zoom lenses for a few landscape shots in the past (Mountains at 400mm) and they can certainly provide an interesting perspective.
I also created a panorama from the same location starting just to the right of the image above. I'm not that happy with the processing but I'm posting the image anyway. If you want to see this image much bigger, you can do so here.
Now the photos from the trip to the Vancouver Aquarium. Photos from previous visits are also online. I have a new favorite tank, the cuttlefish! Those guys are fascinating to watch.
Also got a great shot in the frog display area, these little guys were lined up like they were on duty.
A few other shots from the day.
Another visit to the Vancouver Aquarium
I have had a membership at the Vancouver Aquarium for the last few years and I like to visit often. It's a great place to just walk around and relax. I almost always see something new and different. I like to bring my camera, you never know what you will see.
Don't bug me, I'm crabby
Best buds, Gus and Ollie, hyacinth macaws
A Trip to the Vancouver Aquarium
I visit the Vancouver Aquarium several times a year and always enjoy it. They recently expanded and also have bioluminescence displays which were great to see. A friend of mine stole (ok, borrowed) my favorite lens for my visits to the aquarium, the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Micro VR, so these are all shot with the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8. Since everything is hand held, the VR is actually quite useful.
One of my favorite tanks showing the Pacific Sea Nettle. I feel very relaxed after watching it for a while.
A shrimp in the west coast exhibit.
It was divers weekend (discount if you bring your cert card). Lots of interesting info for divers. Here, coast guard divers prepare to dive in the big tank next to the entrance.
I caught the dolphin show from the underwater viewing gallery. These animals are amazing, incredibly fast and agile. Here, one of them makes an entrance after some acrobatics.
Part of the bioluminescence display. Preserved deep sea fish that use lights on their body to attract prey. Wouldn't want to run into this guy while swimming in the ocean.
This little guy seemed quite interested in me.
Leopard frog taking in the rays.
The colours on some of these frogs is just amazing.
Hangin' out, looks nice and relaxed.
You see a lot more than fish at the Vancouver Aquarium.
The Arapaima, one of the largest freshwater fish in the world.
Looks like this guy just finished molting or is about to. Great looking snake.
And the rest of the images from the day.

Photo: Baby Jellyfish
a macro photo of a tiny baby jellyfish. You can see its reflection in the water's surface. Taken at the Vancouver Aquarium.
Photo: Emerald Tree Boa
A photo of the Emerald Tree Boa taken at the Vancouver Aquarium. I have another photo of this snake which I took on a different day here.
Photo: Hyacinth Macaws at the Vancouver Aquarium
I always love to see the two Hyacinth Macaws at the Vancouver Aquarium. They are loud, colorful, and always active. In this shot it looks like they are good buddies.
Photo: Emerald Tree Boa
This photo was taken at the Vancouver Aquarium. It is an Emerald Tree Boa, looks cute doesn't it? I have a more recent photo taken of the same snake here.
